Safe House

Safe House is an installation of fences made of paper.

This work was inspired by the iron bars that adorn many of the houses in my hometown, Medellín. It is a reflection on how the urban landscape of the city has changed over the years, as violence and insecurity have instilled fear and mistrust in the population. Houses have been transformed into small fortresses by the iron fences. People feel that they need to protect their homes from the dangers of the outside world. For them, fear is an everyday reality, arising from prejudice, discrimination or the violence that encroaches their home, be it through riots or the prevailing insecurity caused by the local gangs.
