Absences consists of a set of photographs of indigenous women from La Guajira, Colombia, that have been printed on paper made by hand. The faces of the women look at us through the gaps in the paper, with an unusual intensity. They transmit a character and strength that have stood against the many adversities they have experienced.
The population of La Guajira is one of the poorest in the country and one of the most neglected by the state. There, different armed groups come together and join large transnational companies in the fight for the management of power over the natural wealth. The indigenous people are experiencing a devastating humanitarian crisis. The women suffer double violence, due to their position as both women and indigenous people.
With this work, I wanted to honor these indigenous women of La Guajira, their culture and their strength, as well as point out the enormous adversities that these people have to endure due to a corrupt and lacking politics.
